How to evaluate gambling blocking software

Start with the barrier the buyer needs. Device blocking limits access on an installed phone or computer; it does not change an operator account, calculate a player risk score or instruct a bank payment block. Keep it distinct from self-exclusion registries, PAM responsible-gambling tools and professional treatment. It can complement those measures without replacing them.

Compare supported operating systems, required device permissions, activation and update handling. Ask what happens on a new device, after a configuration change or when a website has not yet been included. Removal constraints vary between device platforms and must be explained clearly to users. An extensive blocklist does not establish perfect coverage or a recovery outcome.

For sponsored access, specify who receives licences, how users activate voluntarily, the term/renewal arrangements, partner visibility and data minimisation. Activation data is not a diagnosis or proof that a user has stopped gambling. Agree training, signposting, support escalation and the boundaries between the distributing organisation and software supplier.

What to compare

01

Blocking role

Which access barrier does the product provide, and which adjacent jobs remain separate?

02

Website and app scope

Which gambling/high-risk content is included and how are missing entries handled?

03

Supported devices

Which operating systems, versions and device conditions are supported?

04

Installation and activation

How does a user obtain, install, activate and update the software?

05

Sponsored access

How are licences distributed and what activation information can partners access?

06

Removal and configuration limits

Which device-dependent removal constraints or configuration changes affect blocking?

07

Support boundaries

How is device blocking distinguished from self-exclusion, payment controls and treatment?

08

Rollout and support

Who owns user onboarding, compatibility support, training and escalation?

09

Licence and sponsorship terms

Which licence, term, activation, support and renewal charges are included?

Buyer questions, answered

Is device blocking the same as an operator self-exclusion registry?

No. Device software restricts website/app access on the installed device. An operator registry changes eligibility within its own scope; sponsored blocking can be offered as an additional barrier.

Source
Does a blocking licence automatically cover a newly acquired phone?

The user must install and activate the software on a compatible device with the required permissions. Confirm licence limits, operating-system requirements and support before rollout.

Source
Can blocking software promise to cure addiction?

No. Gamban’s current EULA explicitly distinguishes the technical barrier from treatment and encourages additional support and layers. Evaluate blocking scope and support without assuming a recovery outcome.
